2nd NATIONAL MARINE ART CONFERENCE – OCTOBER 19-22, 2017 - Mystic, CT
This year, the NMAC is five weeks later in the fall than our 2016 conference, so our schedule for registration which will tentatively start on April 12th.

The American Society of Marine Artists will host the 2nd National Marine Conference in beautiful Mystic, CT on October 19-22, 2017. Attendees will want to make their reservations for arrival on Wednesday evening, October 18th. Our host hotel will be the Inn at Mystic, which is conveniently located 1 mile from Mystic Seaport and other popular Mystic attractions! Their beautiful grounds encompass nearly 14 acres, offering lovely waterfront views from the property. We have secured the best rates possible during peak season in New England and essentially have held all of the rooms at the hotel for our group, with the exception of a handful that had been booked before securing our contract.
The hotel has offered their regular rooms to our group (17 rooms) at $139 per night plus tax. They have offered their remaining deluxe rooms to us at $159 per night. These rooms offer upgraded features – some with balconies, patios, fireplaces, and some with water views. There are a variety of bed configurations – 2 doubles, 1 queen, 2 queens and 1 king. All rooms include a Continental Breakfast with your room rate, and on the weekends, the continental breakfast may be upgraded to items from their weekend Brunch menu for a fee of $6.00 per person. Room rates will be good for any night from Monday, October 16th through Monday evening, October 23rd. Individuals are required to cancel reservations at least 72 hours prior to arrival (3:00 pm day before arrival) to avoid a charge including one night’s room rate plus tax. Individuals can cancel by calling the Inn at Mystic directly at: (860) 536-9604. If the reservation is no longer required and is not cancelled by 3:00 pm 3 days before arrival, the reservation will be released and one (1) night’s room and tax charge will be billed to the credit card on file. Should you try to book a room and find out all the rooms have been filled, please call us for additional options. We will try to book more rooms at another nearby hotel once our room obligations have been filled, but much will depend on availability at that particular point in time.
The Inn has a restaurant and bar onsite (Harbour House) that will be open for Breakfast, Happy Hour from 3 to 6 p.m. daily, and Dinner nightly. The property includes a lovely Mansion that is used for weddings and special occasions, and a beautiful expansive covered terrace area, which overlooks the waterfront, along with a permanent, year-round tented area for parties and various functions (with heaters), which will be used by our group for a portion of the conference.
Activities onsite will include a special conference kick off dinner on Wednesday evening, at the modest price of $35 per person. There will be a Buffet style Pasta Station feature 3 pasta dishes: Chicken Alfredo with Spinich and Fire Roasted Tomatoes, Tortellini Marinara with Basil Ricotta and Fresh Mozzarella, and Penne a la Vodka. Dinner will include a Garden Salad, Warm rolls with whipped Butter, and Chef's selected Desserts, served with Coffee or Tea. There will also be a Cash bar available. Cost of Dinner: $35 per person

CW Mundy will open the conference on Thursday morning at the beautiful indoor tented area of the Haley Mansion with a special painting demonstration beginning around 9:30 a.m. that will give keen insight to his theories on painting upside down. Thursday afternoon at 1 p.m. Don Demers will give a painting demonstration at the Mansion as well. Don't miss these two great artist presentations! Signature Member Scott Penegar will follow with an intriguing demo on stone carving, showing three different phases in the creative process. To finish out Thursday afternoon, at 4:30 p.m. we will have an opportunity for the first 95 registrants to take a special hour and a half sunset cruise and lighthouse tour out of Mystic on a historic boat; Patience or Prudence. Friday morning, Chris Blossom, William Davis, Don Demers, Lisa Egeli, Len Mizerek, CW Mundy, Len Tantillo, Sergio Roffo and others will be simultaneous participate in a terrific Plein Air paint out, where conference attendees can walk about to see the various techniques being used by each of these Fellows. Weather permitting, the Plein Air Fellow's Paint out will take place on the grounds at Mystic Seaport. Should there be inclement weather, the Paint out will take place in the tented area on the grounds at the hotel.
Mystic Seaport will have one of their Curators speak about the extensive Maritime collections housed at Mystic Seaport. Due to space constraints, this lecture will be available on a first come first serve basis, limited to the first 112 attendees who sign up. This will take place at the Greenmanville Church on the Seaport grounds. There will be a break for lunch tentatively fom 12 p.m to 1:30 p.m. - Following lunch, Russell Jinishian (our 2017 ASMA Lifetime Achievement Award recipient) will be highlighted in a discussion regarding maritime art over the past 30 years and how it pertains to the gallery business and artcollectors. At 3 p.m. we are planning to do a short, informal 30 minute forum on "Tips and Trick of the Trade", which would likely take place in the bar area or on the patio at the Harbour House on the hotel grounds.
Friday evening Mystic Seaport will host a reception for the ASMA 17th National Exhibition at the Rudolph Schaeffer Gallery from 5 to 6:55 p.m. Dinner will follow the reception immediately at the hotel at 7 p.m. - Friday's Dinner will be served Buffet style, consisting of a Garden Salad with Two Dressings, Rolls & Butter, Herb Crusted Chicken with Pan Gravy and Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes, Baked Cod with Cracker Crust and Rice Pilaf, Seasonal Vegetable Medley, Chef’s Selected Desserts with Coffee, Decaffeinated Coffee, Fine Tea Assortment, or Assorted Soft Drinks. There will also be a Cash Bar available. Cost of the dinner is $45 per person. Following the dinner, Russ Kramer will present images from those members in attendance that wish to tell the audience a little bit about their artwork.
Saturday morning, we start at 9 a.m. with our annual general meeting at the hotel, then we will move to the harbor area of beautiful Stonington, CT, where we will host the days activities at the La Grau Center, a charming stone building along the waterfront. Loretta Krupinski will give a great presentation at 11 a.m. on painting historic subjects in Maine. We will take an hour long break for lunch at Noon. Attendees will have the option of pre-ordering a Boxed lunch, consisting of a Sandwich, Chips, Cookie and a Bottle of Water which will be delivered to the La Grua Center for $14 per person, or they may go to one of the local restaurants. Saturday afternoon could be a busy time to try and get into local restuarants. We will return at 1 p.m. for a live painting demonstration with Russ Kramer, who will focus on the importance of having sound drawing reference for composing a great painting. Our Keynote speaker ALAN GRANBY will follow Russ, giving us trememndous insight into some of the most important private maritime collections of our time. Mr. Granby is a noted Author and co-owner of Hyland-Granby Antiques.
Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m. we will meet for cocktails and our Captains dinner in the Davis Gallery at the Mystic Museum of Art located at 9 Waters Street, which is located less than 1 mile from our hotel. We will have a wonderful meal with a seated First course of: Mixed Greens with Dried Cranberries, Pepitas and Sliced Pear Maple Balsamic Vinaigrette , Artisanal Local Breads with Olive Oil and salted Butter. Guest will then enjoy a beautiful catered Buffet of:Seared Pork Tenderloins Topped with Apricot Rosemary Glace , Seafood Stuffed Sole with Lobster cream sauce, Over roasted Potatoes with Garlic and Rosemary, grilled roasted vegetables drizzled with Balsamic drizzle. After the Main course, warm Apple crisp with Cinnamon whipped cream will be served to guests, with Coffee or Hot Tea.
Our 2017 ASMA Lifetime Achievement Award presentation to Russell Jinishian will follow the Captain's dinner. Dinner cost : $68 per personSunday, we will have a Brunch reception for an Invitational Marine Art Show and Sale that will feature more than 40 ASMA artists whose work will be selected from a large number of our members who will be invited to submit for consideration for this additional opportunity at the Lyme Art Association in Old Lyme, CT. Following the show reception, we will do a group tour at the Florence Griswold Museum, with several Fellows giving input on some of the Connecticut River painters who are included in the Museum's collection.
