Annual Signature Membership Portfolio Review
Signature Membership
The Fellows of the American Society of Marine Artists gather annually to review portfolios and invite successful applicants to join a select group of artists with Signature Status. Those artists elected by the Fellows are entitled to use "ASMA" after their name on artworks and in publications.
The submission period for the American Society of Marine Artists Signature Portfolio Review is customarily in the early spring of each year.
Aspiring members and non-members are required to submit twelve .jpeg images that best represent their current body of work. Sculptors must submit two views for each work. All images must be no more than 8 MB and be no less than 5 x 7" and up to 8 x 10" at 300 dpi in quality. Please title images as last name, underscore, first name, underscore, image(number). Example: “Brown_Mary_Image1.” Images are reviewed in numerical order. For more information on image sizing requirements, please contact Board Member Nick Fox: nicolasfox72@gmail.com.
Fine Art mediums considered for Signature membership include oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, colored pencil, pen and ink, graphite, sculpture and scrimshaw. Submissions are open to regular American Society of Marine Artists members and non-member artists working in the mediums above. We do not accept photography, models, glass, fiber, digital art or other miscellaneous art categories. Please contact Fellow Kim Shaklee (kim@kimshaklee.com) if you are unclear regarding your medium.
You will be asked to provide a brief biographical statement and include important accolades and awards and publications. If elected, this information will be published with a selection of your works in the quarterly American Society of Marine Artists News & Journal, a full-color publication.
The Jurors are looking for a cohesive portfolio that best represents the artist’s current work. Beyond received notions of Maritime Art, a broad selection of themes and genres are accepted, including all marine life, marshes, waterways, rivers, lakes, animals and flora. We advise artists to reach out to Fellows with questions about works to be submitted. It is always advisable to submit your best work for jurying. Current work is construed to mean those created within the past three to five years.
There is an $85 fee for the portfolio review. If elected, Regular Members (whose membership is in good standing) will be charged an additional $35 to upgrade to Signature membership rates. Non-Members, if elected, will be required to pay an additional $100 to secure their membership and Signature status.
Each newly elected Signature member will have the option of having a Signature Gallery page on the ASMA website for a special, discounted fee of $30.00 for three images which will be selected from the portfolio you submitted to the Fellows. A link to your personal website on your page is available for an additional $10.00 charge. There is an annual $10 Signature Gallery renewal fee and $10 web link maintenance fee payable at the same time as your annual membership dues.
Signature Members of the Society are required to submit at least one work for jury consideration to every ASMA National Exhibition, which take place approximately every three years. Failure to submit for any National Exhibition will result in the loss of Signature membership status.
The American Society of Marine Artists is a non-profit organization whose purpose is to recognize, encourage and promote marine art and maritime history. We seek to encourage cooperation and the exchange of ideas between artists, historians, students, instructors, collectors and others with interests related to marine art and maritime history. The American Society of Marine Artists maintains a registry for artists, holds exhibitions and promotes the study and improvement of American marine art.
The American Society of Marine Artists is dedicated to fulfilling an informational and educational role. Our National Exhibitions travel to prestigious museums across the country. The Society does not maintain a gallery or sell paintings. Partner galleries and museums frequently hold invitational shows where member paintings are sold.
